Surprised and Impressed

Muscle Memory versus Nerve functioning

I had my most impressive experience with the Emmett Technique when I treated Maria, an elderly lady in my clinic. Her friend Julie as well as her carer and a translator accompanied her.

As Maria was hardly able to speak Julie told me that 6 months ago the nerves in Marias right side of her body had started to die off. Maria had difficulties in walking, to find balance when she was standing, she couldn’t lift up her right arm and she has lost almost all flexibility in her fingers.

All she wanted was to be able to get dressed again by her self, to be able to eat independently and regain her ability to use her I-pad, so that she could communicate.

If I had known her problems prior to the treatment, that is when she was making an appointment, I would have told her that I will not be able to help her because of the missing nerve functioning. However, as she was already in my clinic I felt I at least I had to try something. So I did.

She was not willing to sit down or to lay down as she was too scared that she was not able to get up again. So I treated her standing while she tried to stabilize her self on the massage table.

I worked on her shoulders, neck and forearms remembering Ross's words "5 to 7 moves" – and it worked!!!!!!! I probably was more astonished than Maria.

She could lift up the right arm above her shoulder, which gave her the freedom to put on her jacket without any help. She could hold a pen, which meant she could use her I-pad and was able to eat independently again!

I was so surprised and impressed and so happy for Maria!

After the treatment I immediately rang Ross and asked how and why it worked? His explanation was that muscle memory is stronger than nerve functioning.

I promised myself to remain open minded and at least to try if I can help. With the Emmett Technique I was able to.
